Starting a food truck business is hard, but that doesn’t mean it should be harder than it has to be.

So many times a new food trucker has questions and problems regarding their food truck journey that could have been reduced or eliminated had they known information before they launched their truck. In “Before You Launch Your Food Truck: 8 Questions Every Aspiring Food Trucker Should Ask,”  Ariel D. Smith uses 8 questions to offer tips and suggestions to help you shift gears from having a food truck dream to preparing for a food truck life.

After traveling the country meeting and interviewing about 500 food trucks in the past 5 years through The Food Truck Scholar Podcast and academic research, Ariel D. Smith has compiled an abundance of information regarding the food truck industry from menu creation and marketing, to maintenance and regulations. One of the things she discovered over the years is that aspiring food truckers either do not have enough information or are overwhelmed with information and no clue where to start. Ariel designed this book to be the first touchpoint on your food truck journey. If you’re in multiple online groups and reading big books about food trucks and feeling lost, pause for a moment, pick up this trimmer. What’s best about “Before You Launch A Food Truck” is that it is designed for you to reflect before taking action. Once you have reflected on and answered the questions provided (pages to take notes on each section included!), feel free to jump back into the other resources you’re using to birth your food truck dreams!

Before I get into the review, Ariel D. Smith deserves all the validation that she can possibly receive. A respected pioneer in the modern culinary industry, Ms. Smith has been a powerful academic beacon with her knowledge and guidance for so many of us frontline cooks who have aspired to thrive in the food truck realm. Through her platform as the host of The Food Truck Scholar Podcast, Ariel Smith has proven time and time again through her research, interviews, and assessments that our food trucking dreams are valid.

Before You Launch a Food Truck: 8 Questions Every Aspiring Food Trucker Should Ask is the perfect reading material to help anyone with the slightest curiosity about how they should approach their dream of building out a successful food truck operation. I’ve been able to pass this book onto my staff that are new so that they not only get an understanding of what it took for me to build out my food truck business, but for them to get familiar with the process so that they can begin their own entrepreneurial journey in this industry as well. Most of the staff that I hire are in re-entry programs through various channels, so they’ve been deemed “unemployable” based on their criminal history. I have taken a different approach in assisting them in their redemption period, but Ariel Smith’s wealth of information has opened their eyes to the literal and practical side of growing and sustaining a fruitful concept. From addressing one’s mindset, talking about startup costs, provoking our creativity in marketing, all the way to discussing common mandates in most municipalities, Ariel covers all bases to get anyone started in an easily digestible quick read. I’ve allowed my staff to borrow this book only to receive it back with their own notes written in the margins, highlighted text, and starred sentences to indicate yet another gem. I recommend this book to anyone looking for clarity in direction and reaffirmation in their calling. Ariel D. Smith was obedient to her calling when she created this literary masterpiece.
